PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Heavily impacted river sediment was dredged from areas along the Ohio River and barged to a processing facility located in close proximity to several residences. The processing facility contractor employed the use of a wireless organics vapor monitoring network to measure the effectiveness of active on-site odor control misting and foam dust suppression systems. Vapor concentrations were monitored and recorded. Alarms were transmitted in real time to on-site personnel.
TECHNICAL HIGHLIGHTS:
Direct-read, real-time continuous monitoring capable of PPB-level detection were housed in NEMA4- rated enclosures and powered by standalone solar arrays. Three locations were chosen for static monitoring on the perimeter of the active work area. A local area network was confi gured so data could be transmitted from the devices and stored to a dedicated laptop used at the project site. Simultaneous Suma Canister samples were collected at three separate locations along the same perimeter for analytical comparison.
KEY OUTCOMES:
The effectiveness of the on-site odor controls were demonstrated to the oversight representative, who then communicated these results to local stakeholders. A continuous record of on-site air monitoring data was incorporated into the project documentation report. Minimal facility downtime was reported by the contractor and fears among the nearby residents were alleviated
